Orbital Speed: $v_o = \sqrt{\dfrac{GM}{R}}$

Where:

  • G = 6.674 × 10⁻¹¹ N·m²/kg² (gravitational constant)
  • M = Mass of the planet or celestial body
  • R = Distance from the centre of the body (radius)

🌍 What's the Difference?

Orbital Speed is the minimum speed required to stay in a stable circular orbit around a planet.

Escape Speed is the speed needed to break free from a planet’s gravity — with no further thrust.

In short:

  • Orbital speed keeps you circling
  • Escape speed lets you fly away
